Elizabeth Rukarriwuy is a Garawurra woman with a strong passion for weaving and making jewellery from bush fibres, shells, seeds and nuts. Elizabeth was born deaf however in Yolngu society this is a small obstacle as sign language is a part of everyday life and used by all members of the community.
Elizabeth is one of many women that attend the art centre daily to harvest materials and create artworks. Elizabeth watches and learns from her mukul’s (aunties), including senior artists Helen Ganalmirriwuy and Margaret Rarru. She travels with her mukul’s and their families between their grandmother’s homeland Langarra (Howard Island) and Yurrwi (Milingimbi).
