Tessie began painting and carving as a young girl (13years) along side her father, Stanislaus Puruntatameri. Tessie currently produces stunning carvings of Bima, Purukapali, Taparra and tokimpinni (birds) at Tiwi Design. She also makes traditional tungas and pukumani poles. In 2006 the new managers at Tiwi Design recognised her talent and traditional art and craft skills and encouraged Tessie to carve for exhibition. In 2006 Tessie Tipungwuti and her sisters, Jane Aliminkini and Immaculata Tipiloura participated in four carving exhibitions featuring their work.
Tessie paints with brushes and ochres to create traditional body painting designs on canvas ironwood and bark. She also paints birds and other animals such as crabs, owls, jabiru many which have spiritual significance for her. Tessie has begun to teach the younger artists about traditional Tiwi carving that she learnt from her father Stanislaus Puruntatameri.
