DARWIN ABORIGINAL ART FAIR DECIDES TO “GO DIGITAL” DUE TO CURRENT NATIONAL COVID-19 CRISIS
Australia’s largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual art event will go online this August prioritising community health and safety.
The Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation (DAAFF) has today announced that it will move its plans for the 15th Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, bringing the world-class event online via its cutting-edge digital platform.
In response to the recent outbreak of COVID-19 cases occurring across Australia, including the Northern Territory, the Foundation’s board unanimously agreed to prioritise the safety and protection of participating artists, Art Centres and visitors, moving the event online.
Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation Executive Director, Ms Claire Summers says “It was a heartbreaking decision as we had hoped to bring the national community together on Larrakia Country this year. We know, however, this is the right approach as it was based on the advice we have received from relevant authorities and feedback from our Art Centre participants. As always, safety is paramount.”
Australia’s largest Indigenous visual art fair, which is supported by the Northern Territory Government through Northern Territory Major Events Company, converted to a digital event for the first time in 2020, with the reimagined event attracting its largest ever global audience. This year, the platform returns with reengineered features and interactivity to further enhance the user experience.
Connecting the global art loving community with remote community artists and Art Centres from across Australia is at the core of DAAFF’s values. Event organisers expect that 2021 will deliver another record-breaking event.
“Despite not being physically together this year, we are confident that we can unite digitally to celebrate the art and culture of our incredible network of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In fact, building on last year’s success and insights, we predict this year to be bigger and better than ever.” Ms Summers added.
The Fair and public program will be presented via www.daaf.com.au providing audiences with the opportunity to browse collections and purchase directly from Art Centres through the universal platform.
A decision about the fashion events, Country to Couture and the National Indigenous Fashion Awards is expected to be made at a board meeting later this month.
The digital Fair will be open to the public from 10am ACST on Friday, 6 August, through to 5pm ACST on Wednesday, 11 August. Attendees can gain exclusive early access to the online platform by pre-registering on the DAAF website: https://daaf.com.au/register/
