Ampiji

By Alan Kerinauia

As a child I remember looking at the rainbow colours coming off the sea. My grandmother told me to turn away.  I didn’t know that we were not allowed to look at the rainbow colours. It was explained to me that if you look at the colours your Grandmother would go blind. Now I always think about that time and continue to paint the spirit of the rainbow serpent.  We don’t know what she looks like but I paint the spirit in the form of ampiji  (snake). Her home is Mawuntuwu  Lake, Bathurst Island.

Tiwi Designs Aboriginal Corporation

Tiwi Design Aboriginal Corporation was incorporated in 1980 and is one of the longest established Indigenous art centres in Australia. However, the beginnings of Tiwi Design emerged in 1969 when two young men, Bede Tungatalum and Giovanni Tipungwuti began carving into wood blocks and printing onto textiles. These young men became known as the first Indigenous screen-printers in Australia and began a tradition that continues today at Tiwi Design.
