Wild Banana

Gwenneth Blitner

Acrylic paint on perspex

30cm x 42cm

‘This is a painting of wild banana that grows around Ngukurr. Eat it straight off the tree or put it in the fire to make it soft and sweet. We eat all of it, with the skin, it is dark green. The ones that curl around, the curly one is a vine. Good medicine for clear skin. Chew on the vine for water even if there is no fruit on it.’ – Gwenneth Blitner

Please note this artwork is painted perspex.

Ngukurr Arts

Ngukurr Arts Centre is a unique place where artists explore, share and develop their own distinctive and personal styles.

Situated alongside the banks of the Roper River in South East Arnhem Land, the community of Ngukurr has become a gathering place for many different language groups including Ngalakgan, Alawa, Mangarrayi, Ngandi, Marra, Warndarrang, Nunggubuyu, Ritharrngu-Wagilak and Rembarrnga. Collectively, the language groups are known as Yugul Mangi (all together as one) and their diversity as people is reflective of their art.

Not afraid of experimentation and bold colour, Ngukurr artists merge traditional knowledge and ancient dreaming with modern tales of community life.

Ngukurr Arts has been operating since 2008.
