A collective of coral forms showing the resilience of the reef that after suffering the devastation of coral bleaching. New life and new colour start to appear, giving hope to a future without the threat of climate change to this natural beauty. Led by Marion Gaemers with Lynnette Griffiths, Emma Gela, Florence Gutchen, Lavinia Ketchell and Nancy Naawi, these coral forms have been created by stitching reclaimed fishing net, rope and twine. Reclaimed fishing nets (also known as ghost nets) are derelict fishing nets that drift aimlessly at sea indiscriminately fishing, killing turtles, other creatures and tangling boat propellers.

Ghost Net Art – Erub Arts

Erub, also known as Darnley Island, is one of the most geographically isolated communities in Australia, located 16O km northeast of Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef in the north east Torres Strait.

This beautiful volcanic island, situated in deep turquoise waters is home to approximately 4OO Erubam le. The art centre has gained an international profile creating Ghost Net sculpture from derelict and abandoned fishing nets, wood-fired ceramics, works on paper, and textiles.

Erub Arts has focussed on the collaborative ethos of bringing people together, enriching artistic practice and cultural exchange, building participation and intergenerational learning.

Erub Arts works to revitalise Erubam le culture and share it with the world.
