Public Program
5-7 August
Each year alongside the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, our Art Centres put on a vibrant Public Program of artists talks, masterclasses, material demonstrations, cultural performances, children's activities and more!
The DAAF Public Program invites you to immerse in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, design and culture from across Australia. A unique opportunity to have a yarn with the artists, hear their stories, learn from the masters and engage with the oldest continuous living cultures in the world!
With daily FREE activities for all ages to engage in, and ticketed classes to delve deeper into artistic techniques, there is something for everyone.
Once again a big thank you to each of our participating artists and Art Centres, and to the support of the Northern Territory Government, and media partners Peppermint Magazine.

Soft Sculpture Making Masterclass with Yarrenyty Arltere Artists
Make your own soft sculpture with Yarrenyty Arltere Artists from Alice Springs. Join NATSIAA shortlisted artists Rhonda Sharpe and Louise Robertson, with staff member Rosabella Ryder, to embroider and take home your own small soft sculpture desert animal.

Lino Printing on Fabric Masterclass with Kieren Karritpul
In this Lino Printing on fabric Masterclass, participants will have the opportunity to learn directly from Merrepen Arts, 2020 Textile artist of the year winner Kieren Karritpul. Kieren will demonstrate textile lino printing techniques and participants will have the opportunity to make their very own piece to take home.

Children's Education Spaces - School Engagement Day
DAAFF welcomes young people to be part of a dynamic, interactive and collaborative series of workshops. This new hands-on space will give children an insight into artists’ lives, their Country and the processes involved in creating pieces of art. All elements of the Children’s Education Spaces are FREE and open to all ages. They will be held in Darwin Convention Centre exhibition halls 1-4.Please note, there will be a booking system in place at the Fair, with limited numbers per session.

Weaving Mindirr (Dilly Bags) Masterclass with Yolngu Miyalk
Sit with master weavers Mary Dhapalany, Evonne Munuygurr and Daphne Banyawarra from Gurriwilliny (Bulabula Arts) and learn while these extraordinary craftspeople guide participants through the process of weaving a mindirr (dillybag).

The Life and Times of Albert Namatjiri, and Living Traditions with Iltja Ntjarra Art Centre
JJoin us at the DAAF Sandpit for a small presentation and discussion lead by author Ken McGregor, with artist descendants of Albert Namatjira, from the Iltja Ntjarra Art Centre, to hear about this fabulous publication!
Accompanied by curator Marisa Maher and artists Hubert Pareroultja and Mervyn Rubuntja, joining to speak on Iltja Ntjarra Art Centre’s recent publication Living Traditions.
The group will then be available for signing copies of the publications.

Learn lino printing techniques from Gurgoni artist, Lucy Yarawanga, a senior lino print artist at Babbarra Women's Centre. With a bold style and experimental approach to colour, Lucy and her granddaughter Lucielle, will teach participants to print lino tiles on fabric with confidence and purpose.
